Home is where people prefer to receive health care

The Value of Homecare

Homecare Works!Homecare provides tremendous value for Americans’ healthcare costs and is an important part of the solution to the nation’s healthcare crisis.  Approximately eight million Americans require some type of medical care in the home.

Homecare equipment and services include:

  • Oxygen equipment and therapy
  • Power wheelchairs and other mobility assistive technologies
  • Oxygen and inhalation drug therapy
  • Home infusion, hospital beds
  • Diabetic supplies
  • Sleep devices and other medical equipment and supplies

More than four out of five Americans (82 percent) surveyed in a national telephone survey of 1,000 Americans, by Harris Interactive, expressed a preference for homecare over institutional care, agreeing with the statement, “If I required medical services, I would prefer to receive it in my home if possible, rather than in a hospital or nursing home.”

Cost-Effective Treatment

There is no place like homecare.Home medical equipment can be provided and maintained for just dollars a day. Medicare now pays less than $7 per day for oxygen reimbursements.  Compare this with an average daily cost of about $200 for a nursing facility and $6,000 for a hospital stay.

Homecare Under Attack

Unfortunately, a lack of public awareness about the value homecare provides millions of Americans, has resulted in a long series of deep and disproportionate cuts to the homecare sector by Congress in recent years. These cuts are having a direct negative impact on the quality of homecare, and the very patients and seniors that rely on the benefits of homecare.

The value of homecare must be understood by the American public, Congress and the media.  Your support is critical to that effort.
